We congratulate Carolyn Pittman, our Council’s past Board Chair, for being installed as a new Girl Scouts of the USA National Board Member! She has a long history with Girl Scouting, beginning two decades ago as a troop leader when her daughter, Claire, joined as a Daisy. She is a champion of girl leadership and has supported many girls in their leadership journey, including her daughter Claire who earned the Girl Scout Gold Award! Her transition to a board member included roles as GSCCC’s Board Treasurer and Vice Chair before accepting the Council Board Chair position.
Throughout her time on GSCCC’s Board, she has encouraged our Girl Scouts to showcase their achievements in mission moments at every opportunity, including championing expansion of STEM experience badges and the new STEM resources center at Camp Skimino. She has also been active in advocacy and has traveled to Richmond as part of the delegation to the State Capitol for several years and has served as a National Council Delegate. She is a lifetime member of Girl Scouts and a member of the Juliette Gordon Low Planned Giving Society.
Carolyn also serves on several other nonprofit boards. She has served for ten years on the Virginia Symphony Orchestra Board and as their Board Treasurer for seven years. She serves as a board member with Soundscapes, a non-profit youth development organization that teaches life skills through music, and as an honor society member at Peake Childhood Center, a private, non-profit, early childhood education center serving 200 children (ages 6 weeks to 5 years) from all backgrounds, incomes, and abilities.
When asked why she feels giving volunteer service is important, she said, “My father was a US Marine, serving for four years in active duty in the South Pacific in World War II. His service to our country instilled in me a sense of duty and commitment to our free society. I started volunteering in high school and have expanded that commitment ever since. To me, giving back is the greatest reward.”
Outside of her busy volunteering schedule, Carolyn maintains an active professional life. She is a financial executive with over 30 years of demonstrated results with publicly traded companies, with over 20 years of experience in senior financial leadership roles at Northrop Grumman Corporation, Huntington Ingalls Industries, Inc. (Newport News Shipbuilding), and Maxar Technologies, Inc. She is a licensed certified public accountant and an independent board director of Minerals Technologies, Inc., serving as a qualified financial expert on the audit committee and member of the corporate governance and nominating committee. She has held this director position, elected by the shareholders, since 2017.
Carolyn has been recognized with many awards that include the inaugural Northrop Chairman’s Award, named to the Most Influential Corporate Director list in Women Inc. Magazine, Winter 2019, and, most recently, a recipient of the Girl Scout Thanks Badge.
We welcome Carolyn’s commitment to Girl Scouting and the talents she generously shares. We also congratulate her on being a 2026 honoree on the 2026 Serve Virginia Honor Roll, celebrating exceptional volunteer efforts and community service in our state! We applaud all of Carolyn’s achievements and look forward to her guidance within our Movement as a GSUSA National Board Member.
