GSSEM highly recommends that all troop leaders take the following training sessions to ensure that they're prepared to lead their troops:

Successful Leader Learning Foundation 1

The Successful Girl Scout Leaders Incorporate the Girl Scout Way into Thoughts and Actions module gives new troop leaders a basic overview of key concepts they'll find helpful as they start their troop year.

Successful Leader Learning Foundation 2

The Apply the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) to Develop G.I.R.L.s module explains the Girl Scout program and how it builds girls of courage, confidence, and character. Troop Leaders will understand how to implement the Girl Scout program with their troop through the various activities and projects they'll plan throughout the year with their troop.

Successful Leader Learning Foundation 3

The Successful Girl Scout Leaders Care Deeply About the Overall Well-Being and Development of Girls module guides troop leaders to develop supportive and safe environments for their troops, including strategies and best practices for creating inclusive, girl-led spaces and embracing troop diversity—and on how the role of the troop leader sets this framework.

GSSEM Foundations

The GSSEM Foundations module covers information specific to Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan and is highly recommended for new troop leaders. This module discusses volunteer support at Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan, troop finances, and communicating with adults. This module may be taken in-person, online, or via webinar. GSSEM recommends that learners complete the three Successful Leader Learning Series modules prior to completing this training.


Volunteers may also expand their Girl Scout knowledge with other learning opportunities:

  • Grade-Level Training Sessions are specifically geared toward a Girl Scout program level. These are offered in-person or via webinar. Please check our event listings to see when grade-level training sessions are offered.
  • Short & Snappies are online training modules that explore a topic in less than 15 minutes.
  • Enrichment Training Sessions are longer online training sessions that go deeper into a topic.
  • Outdoor Training Sessions help boost adults' knowledge of camp and the outdoors.
